Knowing the Enemy

Part 2 of 10 in the Be Battle Ready Series.

Read Ephesians 6:10-20

Put on all of God’s armor so that you will be able to stand firm against all strategies of the devil.  For we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies, but against evil rulers and authorities of the unseen world, against mighty powers in this dark world, and against evil spirits in the heavenly places. Ephesians 6:11-12 (NLT)

To be a battle-ready believer, you must know your enemy

In the 1960’s, the United States fought a war in the jungles of Vietnam. Often, veterans of this war will acknowledge the fact that in many situations, it was near impossible to identify who you were fighting against.  A more current illustration is the wars in Iraq and Afganistan. Today’s ally may very well be tomorrow’s enemy and vice-versa! However, Christians have only one enemy of their soul, Satan.

First, Satan employs wicked “strategies” against humanity (v.11. The Bible defines these devices as the John writes, ” For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes and the boastful pride of life, is not from the Father, but is from the world” (1 John 2:16 NASB -emphasis added). Through ungodly cravings for pleasure, things we see, and pride in our accomplishments and possessions, Satan lays the trap. You must be on guard against these tactics.

Secondly, “we are not fighting against flesh-and-blood enemies” (v. 12). A timeless tactic in battle is to divide and conquer. Satan is a master of this maneuvering. How many times have churches fallen prey to fighting and feuding? Satan rejoices when he tricks us into thinking a person is our problem. You must realize the hierarchy of hell is the real enemy!

Suggestions for Prayer:

Pray the Lord’s Prayer and focus on the line concerning not being lead into temptation. Also, pray for those with whom you may have experienced difficulties.
