Be Faithful, Not Fearful!

For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!”

Romans 8:15

Christians should not be slaves to fear.

What should Christians do during this COVID-19 pandemic? If you’ve been on social media, you’ve noticed various actions taken by the Christian community. I’m not writing from the physical health angle. Christians need to follow the recommendations of government agencies, such as the CDC and the DPH. The Bibles states, “Every person is to be in subjection to the governing authorities. For there is no authority except from God, and those which exist are established by God” (Rom. 13:1, NASB). The government is not demanding we stop worshipping God. They are asking us to help prevent the spread of this virus to our neighbors. Again, I’m not focusing on the physical or civil duties of Christians. I want to talk about the spiritual duty of Christians in this crisis.

What should Christians do spiritually during this crisis? There is a plethora of things. However, the panic in the Christian community is unnecessary. Fear drives panic. Fear makes people hoard up toilet paper! The Bible says, “For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind” (2 Timothy 1:7, KJV). Christians should not be slaves to fear. Our Father is faithful!

The Bible says, “For you have not received a spirit of slavery leading to fear again, but you have received a spirit of adoption as sons by which we cry out, “Abba! Father!” (Romans 8:15, NASB). Did you catch that last part? (The crying out to “Abba! Father!” part.) During this time of “social distancing,” instead of feeding on the newsfeeds, take time to read God’s promises. Cry out to your Heavenly Father. Pray not only for yourself, but your neighbor too. Let them see Christ’s peace in you. Don’t feed the panic by posting fear-driven articles. Speak truth. Speak facts and remember God’s promises are true! Beloved, don’t fear. Place your faith in the ever faithful one! He’s waiting to hear you cry, Abba Father!
